Carel J. Van Oss

van Oss was born on September 7, 1923.  At age 18, he joined the Dutch Resistance in World War II and became adept at creating fake identities, creating cards for over 900 Dutch Jews escaping to Switzerland and dozens of Allied pilots shot down by the Germans.  In 1983, he was awarded the Netherlands Commemorative Resistance Cross for his actions.

He came to the University at Buffalo as an Associate Professor in Microbiology and Head of the Immunochemistry Laboratory.  He was promoted to Full Professor in 1972.  Editor of 3 scientific journals and 4 academic journals, he authored or coauthored, or edited 11 books in 3 languages, and published over 360 articles and chapters.

Carel Jan van Oss died on February 22, 2018.
