Richard W. Boynton

Richard Boynton was credited with helping to start to the University at Buffalo's Department of Philosophy and taught at the university for 37 years. Boynton attended the Meadville Theological School in Pennsylvania, graduating in 1895. In 1908, He became the minister of the Unitarian Church in Buffalo. He would serve as its minister until 1926 and then again from 1937-1942.
Boynton joined the faculty of UB in 1920 as an instructor in philosophy and sociology. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1922 and master's degree in 1923, at which point he was named professor of philosophy. In 1923, Boynton was also named chair of the newly established Department of Philosophy, a position he would hold until 1937. In addition to his teaching duties in the Department of Philosophy, Boynton taught in Millard Fillmore College (then UB's school for continuing education) and in UB's Summer School. A popular professor, the last course he taught before his retirement from UB in 1957 had an enrollment of 91 students.
