Alan J. Solo was born on November 7, 1933 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He earned an S.B degree in Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1955), and then went on to earh an M.A. in Chemistry (1956) and Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry (1959) from Columbia University. In 1962, Solo joined the faculty of the University at Buffalo's Department of Medicinal Chemistry. He achieved the rank of full-professor in 1970.
