F. William Lawvere

F. William Lawvere was born in Muncie, Indiana. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Indiana University and Ph.D. (1963) from Columbia University.  For the next ten years, Lawvere worked and studied at a number of universities in the United States, Canada and Europe.  In 1974, he joined the faculty of the University at Buffalo Department of Mathematics.  In 1978, Lawvere was named the Martin Professor of Mathematics, a position he would hold for five years.  He became an emeritus professor and adjunct professor of philosophy in 2000.
