V.B.13.d.6

Sixth Part of the Holograph Scribal Transcription of the “Circe” episode

Material Description and Collation

The manuscript consists of 1 sheet of unruled paper, watermarked Hotel Seville with a crest, with ragged edges that suggest it was cut from a larger sheet, writing appears on the rectos only and the versos are blank, in the hand of Cyprian Beach in black ink, with corrections and additions in Joyce’s hand in black ink.

Measurements

The sheets measure approximately 17.0 x 14.5 cm.

Pagination

The sheet was paginated “12” in the lower left margin in lead pencil.

Contents

The manuscript is a partial holograph transcription of the Rosenbach (faircopy) manuscript that is continued from MS V.B.13.d.5 and is continued on MS V.B.13.d.7. This transcription was used as the copy text for the typescripts of this section of the “Circe” episode (Buffalo MSS V.B.13.e–h). The text on the pages is as follows:

MS V.B.13.d.6 Ulysses 1922 (1992) / 1984
p. [1]: “10” Zurich; 532.23–533.16 / 15.3950–3977
p. [2]: [“11”] Missing
p. [3]: “12” 533.32–534.12 / 15.3989–4004

Publication

Only p. [3] of this manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 14.347.

Notes

Page [1] of the manuscript is part of the Hans E. Jahnke Bequest in the Zurich James Joyce Foundation, but p. [2] is not known to be extant. The left margin of p. [3] is partially discolored by a small sheet placed on the manuscript by Peter Spielberg, and there is a water stain on the verso of the page. The sheets were folded horizontally in the center, probably together with MSS V.B.13.d.5 and 13.d.7.
