VI.I.2.

*VI.I.2: "Work in Progress"/Finnegans Wake Emendations And Errata: Emendations for the Galley Proofs for transition 1/Finnegans Wake I.1 (1927):

Material Description, Collation

The manuscript is a loose sheet of rolled paper, with watermark of an image of a mailed arm & battle-axe and below it: "FABRIQUÉ EN ÉCOSSE". Joyce used the sheet horizontally, with the perforated edge on the left hand side; the emendation is on the recto in Joyce’s hand in black ink. This manuscript is the same kind of paper as MSS VI.I.1, I.31, I.43, and VI.J.4; all were probably torn from the same or similar tablets or blocks of sheets.

Measurements

The manuscript measures 13.0 x 19.0 cm.

Contents

The manuscript is an extradraft sheet with instructions to further emend the proofs of transition 1 (April 1927), only one copy of which is known to be extant. See transition 1 10.11–12 as well as FW 004.14.

JJA Draft Code

I.1§1.4+.

Dating

Joyce made this emendation in March 1927.

Other Markings

On the recto, Joyce wrote "M. Eliott Paul" in lead pencil in the upper margin and " | p. 1 or 2" in black ink above the instructions for the revisions. There are mathematical computations, probably all in Joyce’s hand, in black ink on the recto and in lead pencil on the verso.

Notes

This later revision was made after Joyce had revised the only extant proof of transition 1 and it was only partially incorporated in the text of transition (see BL 47472, f. 75; JJA 44.205 and then BL 47475, f. 3v; JJA 44.232). The emendation does not appear as directed by Joyce on this manuscript on any subsequent draft or printing of the text.
