VI.G.1.
***VI.G.1: "Work in Progress"/Finnegans Wake Galley Proofs: Partial Copy of a Galley Proof for transition 4/Finnegans Wake I.4 (1927):
Material Description and Collation
The manuscript is a partial quarto sheet of pulp paper. It was printed only on one side. It now consists of only 3 pages of printed text: the lower right quarter of the sheet (what is now BL MS 47472, f. 377; JJA 46.172) was detached and is now in the British Library with the rest of this copy of the galley proof. The pages contain corrections and revisions in Joyce’s hand in two shades of black ink. The manuscript was cleaned, de-acidified, and encapsulated in May 1988.
Measurements
The manuscript measures 32.8 x 50.0 cm.
Pagination
Each page is numbered "11", "12", and "13", respectively, in the center of the top margin in lead pencil, possibly by the printer.
Contents
The manuscript is part of the only known marked copy of the galley proofs for transition 4 (July 1927). See transition 4, 56.18–59.20 as well as FW 90.09–94.31.
JJA Draft Code
I.4§1.7/2.7.
Dating
The manuscript is undated but the set of proofs was date stamped "27 May 1927" by the printer (see BL MS 47472, fs. 367, 375, and 380); Joyce revised the proofs by mid June 1927 (see Buffalo MSS X.C.138, C.140, and C.148; JJSB122, 123, and 126–127).
Other Markings
The initial "J" was written in the lower margin of each sheet in lead pencil, probably by the printers. The number "2" was written in the upper right corner of p. "11" in a different hand and in a darker shade of pencil from the other pagination (this marking was probably made during the preservation process as an identifying number). Several horizontal pencil marks also appear in the upper margin on p. "11" in lead pencil. Some of the ink used to make the emendations bled through to the verso.
Publication
The manuscript has not been reproduced, but the remainder of the galley proof (BL 47472, fs. 367r–383r) has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 46.161–170 and 172–178.
Notes
This marked copy of the set of galley proofs is complete. The leaves have become detached along the center margins of the manuscript where the manuscript was folded; archival tape was placed behind the folds to affix and reinforce the manuscript. The tape was also used to fix a tear on p. "12" and a taped piece of archival tissue paper was put in place of the missing page.
Among the manuscripts in the National Library of Ireland’s "Joyce Papers 2002," there is a partial (only pp. [1]–[8]), previously unrecorded (unmarked) setting of later page proofs for transition 4. It is currently catalogued as NLI MS 36,638/18/B/1 and incorporates the revisions on this galley proof (BL MS 47472, fs. 367r–376r, Buffalo MS VI.G.1, pp. [1]–[3], and BL MS 47472, fs. 377r–383r). That page proof setting is not identical to the printed text. Therefore, JJA draft code for this chapter needs to be revised to accommodate the National Library of Ireland manuscript, which should be listed as I.4§1.8/2.8, and so the subsequent levels should all be +1.
