About

The University at Buffalo, University Archives collects and preserves records documenting the university’s history, as well as the broader Buffalo-Niagara region and Western New York community. In addition to official university records, the Archives holds the personal papers of faculty, alumni, and administrators, as well as materials from local activists, artists, educators, politicians, and organizations.

Holdings span a wide range of formats, including manuscripts, photographs, oral histories, audiovisual media, scrapbooks, and born-digital materials. Collections cover diverse topics—from the 1901 Pan-American Exposition to regional environmental justice movements—and continue to grow through ongoing donations from the campus and public. Notable digital collections include documentation of prominent cultural and political figures who have visited the university.

The Archives is open to all researchers, not just members of the UB community. Services include reference assistance, access to secure reading room facilities, and a robust program of archival instruction and workshops. Staff are available to support both scholarly and public research and welcome new contributions that help expand the historical record of the university and its surrounding communities.
