Records 111

1959 Buffalonian Talking Page 45 rpm record, 1959

The recording crackles to life, then bursts into fanfare. The announcer, in full radio voice, narrates the “talking page,” a 45-rpm disc included with the 1959 Buffalonian yearbook. Together, they provided “a verbal, as well as a pictorial résumé of the year’s activities.”

We hear of exciting news from all corners of the university. The football team had its best year ever. Count Basie performed at the Alpha Phi Delta Winter Dance. A
scientist from the Bell Aircraft Corporation presented a lecture on rockets and the space age.

Finally, the charming 11-minute record draws to a close with an instrumental version of UB’s alma mater, signaling the end of an era for the Class of ’59, but also the beginning of a new adventure. Chancellor Clifford C. Furnas lent his voice to the 45, offering this message to graduating students: “With the loss of hair or the graying of hair or perhaps getting just a little bit paunchy, may you always be prouder year by year of your alma mater, the University of Buffalo.”

Similar to an old-time radio show, the narrator of the “talking page” is accompanied by a gamut of sound effects, including a ringing alarm clock and a yawn; Hayes Hall clock’s Westminster chimes; footsteps falling on campus pavement; and the ka-chunking rhythm of an IBM machine shooting out mid-semester grades.

Annual Reports of Deans and Directors [microfilm], 1931-1982

This collection contains microfilmed annual reports from 1931 to 1982 of schools, departments, offices, institutes and centers of the University at Buffalo. In the 1980s, a portion of annual reports were microfilmed as the original reports were fragile typescripts or degrading mimeographs.

Reports in this collection cover pivotal moments in the development of the University. Particularly noteworthy are reports of the World War II era,
(which include war training programs, job placement for women, and veterans services); Chancellor Samuel Capen’s tutorial instruction plan; and the establishment of the Colleges in the late 1960s through the 1970s.

As a format, annual reports give a broad overview of the University at a given point in time, including of academic units, budgets, bequests and fundraising, campus planning, and facilities; and statistics such as enrollment, degrees conferred, and faculty research publication. These reports are a critical research resource as they offer not only “what was,” but “what might have been” (i.e. insight into the assumed and planned trajectories of departments, campuses, budgets, academics, etc.) as well as “firsts.” Goals of programs and departments at their inception are noted. Reports of Schools and Faculties, particularly after 1950, often incorporate reports of departments.

Researchers should also consult individual collections for departments, schools, offices, etc. for additional reports either falling outside this date range or not microfilmed.

Annual Reports of Deans and Directors, 1966-2017

Annual reports give a broad overview of the University at a given point in time, including of academic units, budgets, bequests and fundraising, campus planning, and facilities; and statistics such as enrollment, degrees conferred, and faculty research publication. These reports are a critical resource for researchers as they offer not only “what was,” but “what might have been” (i.e. insight into the assumed and planned trajectory of departments, campuses, budgets, academics, etc.) as well as “firsts.” Goals of programs and departments at their inception are noted.

This collection contains printed annual reports of schools, departments, offices institutes and centers of the University at Buffalo. Materials were collected by University Archives on an ad hoc basis; therefore, the collection is not comprehensive. Researchers are advised to consult records of individual schools, departments, offices, institutes, and centers for additional annual reports.

In the 1980s, a portion of annual reports were microfilmed and cover the years 1931 to 1982. This film is available for use; see 5/2/MF 353-454.

Furnas (Clifford C.) Campus Site Study Task Group records, 1963-1964

On July 3, 1963, President Furnas wrote a memo expressing his personal thoughts and opinions about the size and growth potential of the (then present) Main Street campus. He suggested either a split campus site or an entirely new site. At the UB Fall Conference, September 19-20, 1963, John A. Beane brought the problem and possible solutions before the faculty and administration.

On October 7, 1963, Claude Puffer wrote a report entitled,
“Should We Consider a New Campus?” and in November presented an “Alternate Master Plan for SUNYAB.”

By this time, the campus community was becoming interested in the future of the University. Furnas called a Campus Location Discussion on December 23, 1963. At that time, information about the present campus and alternate future sites or additions were discussed. Furnas appointed the Campus-Site Study Task Groups and provided them with statistics and other information.

On January 10, 1964, Furnas presented a memo with approximate reactions and preferences of the Campus-Site Study Task Groups. Then, on January 15, he sent each Task Group a copy of his recommendations to SUNY on the Buffalo Campus site(s). By late January and early February, each committee had reacted with approvals, corrections, additions, and suggestions.

Furnas wrote a “Recapitulation of Site-Selection Arguments” on February 3, 1964.

The collection includes 3 copies (in most cases) of reports and memos exchanged during the period July 3, 1963 to February 3, 1964.

Office of the President monthly reports, 1964-1975

These monthly reports give a broad overview of the University at Buffalo from 1964 to 1975 (reports were not created for the summer months of July and August). Heavy on statistics, included are enrollment numbers, at large and for academic units, and with comparisons to previous years. Data on campus buildings and planning, academic accreditations, evidence of faculty research and publication, awards, and policies, and university events are also included.

These reports cover pivotal years in the history of the University, namely the first decade as a state institution, expansion to the North (Amherst) campus, and student unrest. For example, the May 1964 report includes a description of President Furnas’ decision to allow Selective Service exams to be administered on campus. That decision prompted the first campus student sit-in on May 2. The report describes the decision, the concerns of the protesters, and the creation of a University Task Force Committee, made up of students and faculty.

Of particular note: Some files include the final reports, as well as the “raw data” and/or background material used to create the report. This background material offers highly detailed descriptions of faculty, departments, facilities, and events on campus, and may not have been written into the final monthly report. Researchers would be well-served to study this documentation.
