Death: 2026George C. Lee joined the faculty of the University at Buffalo’s Department of Civil Engineering in 1961. He earned a BS from National Taiwan University, (1955) and both an MS (1958) and Ph.D. (1960) from Lehigh University. Lee was promoted to associate professor in 1963 and professor in 1967. He served as acting chair of the Department of Civil Engineering in 1970-1971 and 1973-1974. He was named chair of the department in 1974 and served in that capacity until 1977. Lee became dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in 1978 and held that position until 1995. In 1986, Lee and former UB President Robert L. Ketter founded what is now known as the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER) where he was director from 1992-2003. In 1995, George C. Lee received both the University at Buffalo President’s Medal for Distinguished University Service and the Walter P. Cooke Award from the University at Buffalo Alumni Association. He retired in 2014.
