UB hosts Ohio State at the Aud
College hockey made its modern debut at Buffalo’s Memorial Auditorium on Sunday, January 23, 1972 in the afternoon when the University at Buffalo’s Bulls met Big Ten representative Ohio State. More than 4000 fans saw the Bulls hold their own against a powerful Ohio State squad. Although the Bulls held a 2-1 lead early in the second period, Ohio State ended up winning the game 5-2. Mike Dunn of Buffalo played spectacularly stopping 52 Ohio State shots.
The two team also played at a jammed packed Amherst Recreation Center the previous night with Ohio State outclassing UB 6-1.
Coach Ed Wright’s UB sextet lost both ends of a weekend visit to Columbus earlier that season. OSU defeated the Bulls twice, 6-0 and 8-3, behind an excellent mixture of American and Canadian talent.
Buffalo featured a local stateside bred player — senior right wing Nick Beaver from Kensington High School. Beaver skated the second line with center Bill Newman (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and left wing Ted Miskolczi (Fort Erie, Ont.).
The Buffalo Bulls hockey team played in Division II of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) during the 1971-1972 season, posting an overall 14-8-0 mark, second best in the ECAC II at 12-3-0.
