Material Description and Collation
The manuscript consists of 5 sheets of double-spaced black ribbon bottom (carbon) copy typescript on tan paper, with relatively few changes in an unknown hand in lead pencil; the versos are blank.
Measurements
The manuscript measures 27.0 x 21.0 cm.
Contents
Armand Petitjean prepared this translation of "From a Banned Writer to a Banned Singer" with Joyce’s supervision (Slocum and Cahoon D34). A copy of this typescript was presumably used for the printing in Mesures.
Dating
The translation was probably prepared in 1935–1936.
Other Markings
On the top left margin of p. [1] there is a note in lead pencil in an unknown hand that reads "uncorrected".
Publication
This manuscript has not been reproduced and was not listed in Spielberg but the translation was published in Mesures [II.]1 (Paris: [Librarie José Corti]; 15 January 1936; pp. [91]–99).There were also 8 numbered and signed offprints of this appearance, Sylvia Beach’s copy (no. 1) of which is at Buffalo.
Notes
The sheets were folded horizontally and vertically. There is an unmailed envelope with the manuscript, with a return address printed in black ink in the upper left hand margin: "Société Française de Librairie | "Gebethner & Wolff" | Ksiegarnia Polska | 123, Bould St-Germain | Paris-VIe". In the center of the envelope Beach wrote a note in lead pencil: "given by JJ | to SB | first typescript | of O’Sullivan | piece". In the upper right corner Beach has written another note, in blue ink: "(translation of O’Sullivan | pub NRF, (Honi soit)".
