IX.B.2.a.
IX.B.2.a [IX. B. 1. a.]: Miscellaneous Manuscripts: Dubliners: Partial Page Proofs of the French Translation of "Grace" for Gens de dublin as "De par la Grace" (1923)
Material Description and Collation
The manuscript consists of 9 sheets of printed page proofs on pulp paper (folded in half to form leaves, with four pages of text per sheet, though many of the sheets have since split into separate leaves), with corrections in blue ink on pp. 213, 214, 216–225 and 245, in black ink on p. 224–237, 239–246 and 247, and in purple ink on p. 241–247. There is also a note in black ink, probably in Joyce’s hand, with corrections for p. 246 loosely inserted between pp. 246 and 247. Page [248] is blank.
Title
The printed title was changed from "ACTIONS DE GRACE" to"DE PAR LA GRACE" (possibly in Fernandez’s hand) in the upper margin of the odd-numbered on pp. 213–225 in blue ink, and on the odd-numbered pp. 227–247 in black ink; and "Gens dE Dublin" is printed on all even-numbered pages.
Measurements
The whole leaves measure 22.4 x 27.9 cm.
Pagination
The pages are numbered "213"–"247" but p. [248] is not numbered.
Contents
The manuscripts are page proofs for the first French translation by Yva Fernandez of the story "De par la Grace" ("Grace") for Gens de Dublin. There are corrections in purple ink, which are probably in Fernandez’s hand, as well as corrections in blue and black inks, probably in Joyce’s hand. The corrections in black ink were made after those in purple ink. The numerous corrections were incorporated in the text of the first edition of Gens de Dublin, translated by Yva Fernandez, Hélène Du Pasquier and Jacques-Paul Reynaud (Paris: Librarie Plon-Nourrit et Cie, 1926; pp. 213–248; Slocum and Cahoon D13).
Dating
Dated by the printer: 22 June 1923.
Other Markings
The sheets are date stamped on p. 225 and on p. 241 in purple ink.
Publication
This manuscript has not been reproduced.
Notes
Joyce’s story "De par la Grace" was published as the fourteenth story in Gens de Dublin (Paris: Plon-Nourrit et Cie, 15 April 1926), pp. [213]–248 (Slocum and Cahoon D13). There are rust stains from a paperclip on pp. 213 and [248], and on the verso of the note.
