Contents

The manuscript is a copy of the review in the Freeman’s Journal of "Miss Margaret M. Sheehy’s Dramatic & Musical Recital" (8 January 1901) that was prepared by Michael Healy at Joyce’s request (see Joyce to Beach; 28 April 1928; Buffalo MS X.C.164; [X.B.114; #137]; JJSB 134–135). It includes the following description of Joyce’s participation in Cupid’s Confidante: "A revelation of amateur acting was presented in the case of Mr J. A. Joyce, as that desperate society villain Geoffrey Fortescue. But for the fact that he was too young to copy, plagiarise, or otherwise hamper himself by such a thing, one might say that he followed with extraordinary skill the combined methods of Charles Mathews and Robertson of "Hawtrey" fame" (p. [8]).

Dating

The manuscript was prepared between 28 April and 7 May 1928. It was enclosed in Healy’s letter to Beach in Buffalo Joyce Collection Beach (7 May 1928; XIII: Healy to Beach), though the letter from Healy is stored with this manuscript.

This manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 3.402–411.

Notes

There are rust stains from paper clips on Healy’s letter to Beach and on p. [10v]. The sheets were folded twice horizontally, presumably for mailing. There are ink stains on the versos of pp. [8] and [9].
