V.B.4

Partial Printers’ Typescript of the "Hades" (6) Episode for The Little Review and Ulysses (1917)

Material Description and Collation

The manuscript consists of 12 loose sheets of paper, which Spielberg described as "thin" typing paper, with corrections and additions in Joyce’s hand in black ink on all of the pages. Pages [2], [9], [10], [11] and [16] are single-spaced typewritten blue ribbon top (original) copies and pp. [3], [6], [7], [8], [13], [14] and [15] are black ink bottom (carbon) copies; all the versos are blank. The sheets were all cleaned, de-acidified and encapsulated (but only the top copy typescript sheets were also backed with protective paper) in May 1988.

Measurements

The sheets measure approximately 28.0 x 21.4 cm.

Pagination

The sheets were paginated "63", "64", "67"–"72" and "74"–"77" in the lower right margin in black ink, possibly by Joyce, in 1921 for the printing of Ulysses . The printers’ pagination for Ulysses of this typescript was continued from the "Calypso" typescript (MS V.B.3.a.i, only pp. "41" and "42" of which are known to be extant).

Contents

The manuscript is a partial typescript, comprised of mixed top and bottom copies of what were presumably 3 complete typescripts (a top copy and 2 bottom copies), of which no other copy is known to be extant; based on a collation of the printers’ pagination, this typescript would have consisted of 12 pages. The typescript was not prepared from the Rosenbach (faircopy) manuscript version of the episode but presumably from a lost working draft. The "Hades" episode appeared in the September 1918 issue of The Little Review (V.5), pp. 15–37. Joyce further revised the typescript in black ink for the printing of Ulysses . The text on the pages is as follows:

Dating

The typescript was prepared in mid May 1918 in Zurich and further revised by Joyce in Paris by August 1921 in black ink for the printing of Ulysses (see Joyce to Weaver; 18 May 1918; LI 113).

Other Markings

There are Darantiere printers’ markings on pp. [3], [6]–[9], [11] and [13]–[16] in pencil. There are markings in black and dark blue crayons on p. [10]. There is a horizontal line in red crayon at the end of the episode on p. [16] and water stains on pp. [2], [9] and [14]. During conservation, therefore after the manuscript’s publication in the JJA , a tear in the upper margin on p. [14] was repaired and the sheets were marked "V B 4, 1"–"V B 4, 12" in the lower right corner in pencil.

Publication

This manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 12.273–284.

Notes

Though not reproduced in the JJA , p. [12] (p. "73") is at Harvard; the location of the other missing pages is not known. No pre-Rosenbach manuscript version of the "Hades" episode is known to be extant. The first placards of the episode were set in August 1921.
