Printed Sheets of the Front Matter of the Third American Printing for the Second English Printing (1918)
The manuscript consists of 3 leaves of printed paper; the versos are blank.
The leaves measure 27.0 x 19.8 cm.
The pages are not numbered.
The manuscript consists of printed sheets from the third American printing of A Portrait (New York: Huebsch, January 1918) for the second English edition (London: Egoist Press, 1921), which used imported American sheets, as follows: p. [1] is the “list of books by the same writer”; p. [2] is the “title page”; and p. [3] is the “copyright notice and printing statement”. These sheets were probably sent by Harriet Shaw Weaver with a list of requested changes (MS II.B.2).
The third American edition of A Portrait was reprinted by B.W. Huebsch in 1918 (see Slocum and Cahoon, A11).
There is a note on p. [1] in hand of Miss Weaver in pencil that reads: “Send these proofs to B. W. Huebsch. Rush”. There is another mark also in pencil, which is possibly the printer’s initials, in the upper left corner of the same sheet.
The manuscript has not been reproduced.
The pages have been folded twice horizontally.
