V.A.10

Partial Draft of the “Nausicaa” (13) Episode (1920)1

Material Description and Collation

The manuscript is a copybook in Joyce’s hand in black ink, with pencil additions and/or revisions on pp. [1v], [2v], [3r], [4r]–[6r], [9r], [11r], [11v], [12r], [14r], [15r], [16r], [17r], [18v] and [19r]. It consists of 20 leaves (40 pages) of unlined paper, of which 37 pages are inscribed and 3 are blank: pp. [13v], [15v] and [20v].

As manufactured, the copybook was held together with 2 metal staples in the center vertical fold; they were removed for conservation purposes and the manuscript was disbound. It has a heavier stock paper cover, the front cover recto and back cover verso of which are red colored, whereas the front cover verso and back cover recto are tan. A blank white paper label with an orange ornamental border printed on it is pasted on the front cover recto. The cover and each sheet were cleaned, de-acidified and individually encapsulated in February 1988.

Measurements

Each leaf measures 20.6 x 16.5 cm.

Pagination

Joyce foliated the rectos of each leaf “1)”–”20)” in pencil in the left margins, usually in the bottom corner; the remaining pages are not numbered. The next copybook in this draft continues the text here in mid sentence and is foliated “21)”–”28)” and the last copybook is foliated “29)”–”35)”.
