Partial Duplicate Typescript of the “Nausicaa” (12) Episode for The Little Review (1919)


Material Description and Collation

The manuscript consists of 3 loose sheets of paper, which Spielberg described as “thin” typing paper, with some corrections and additions in Joyce’s hand in black ink on all of the pages. All of the pages are single-spaced typewritten black ink bottom (carbon) copies; all the versos are blank. This manuscript has not undergone conservation treatment. 


Measurements

The sheets measure approximately 28.0 x 21.5 cm.


Pagination

The sheets are paginated “216”, “220” and “226” in the lower right margin, in purple ink on p. [1] and in black ink on the other sheets.


Contents

The manuscript is a partial duplicate bottom copy of what were at least 3 complete typescripts (a top copy and 2 bottom copies) of the “Nausicca” episode, of which 2 other complete copies survive (Buffalo MS V.B.11.a.i and Cornell, item 57). This copy of the typescript contains only those additions Joyce made for The Little Review publication in 1920. The text on the pages is as follows:

Dating

The typescript was prepared in February–March 1920 in Trieste and revised by Joyce for The Little Review in black ink .

This manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 13.268–270.


Notes

There are 3 pre-Rosenbach (faircopy) manuscripts of the episode: Buffalo MS V.A.10 and 2 further copybooks Cornell, item 56. The Cornell Joyce collection contains a complete copy of the typescript of the “Nausicaa” episode (item 57). The first placards of the episode were set in late October 1921.
