V.A.7
List of Incidents for the “Cyclops” (12) Episode (1919)
Material Description and Collation
The manuscript is composed of 1 loose sheet of heavier stock unlined paper in Joyce’s hand in ink and pencil. It was presumably torn from a copybook. Joyce wrote on what would have been the verso of the leaf and the other side is blank. The leaf was cleaned, de-acidified and encapsulated in February 1988.
Measurements
The leaf measures 22.4 x 18.0 cm.
Contents
The manuscript contains a schematic list of scenes or incidents (draft versions of only some of which are known to be extant) for what became the latter half of “Cyclops.” Joyce compiled a similarly eclectic list of scenes and “arrivals” in the pub for the episode on NLI MS 36,639/10, p. [22v].
There is also a relatively short, later draft of a passage (see Ulysses 12.1356–1359) in black ink; it is probably a revised addition to the text on MS V.A.6, p. [3v]. Joyce made a related list of characters for the episode: Cornell, item 55. See also MS V.A.19, p. [33r], for a similar “Schema” for “Circe.”
Dating
Joyce wrote the fragmentary texts in this manuscript in late June or July 1919 in Zurich.
Other Markings
Joyce crossed through 2 items of the list in red crayon (see Herring, Buffalo , p. 129). There are slight traces of rust from a paper clip in the upper left corner of the inscribed page. During conservation, therefore after the manuscript’s publication in the JJA , the inscribed page was labeled “V. A. 7.” in pencil.
Publication
The manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 13.136. It has been transcribed and annotated in Phillip F. Herring (ed.), Joyce’s Notes and Early Drafts for “Ulysses”: Selections from the Buffalo Collection , (Charlottesville: University Press of Virginia, 1977), pp. 129–130.
