V.B.12.a.i
Complete Printers’ Typescript of the “Oxen of the Sun” (14) Episode for The Little Review and Ulysses (1920)
Material Description and Collation
The manuscript consists of 28 loose sheets of paper, which Spielberg described as “thin” typing paper, with corrections and additions in Joyce’s hand in black ink on all of the pages. Pages [10], [11], [12], [15], [16], [26] and [28] are blue ribbon top (original) copies and pp. [1]–[9], [13], [14], [17]–[25] and [27] are black ink bottom (carbon) copies; all of the pages are typewritten and single-spaced and the versos are blank. Only the top typescript sheets were backed with protective paper and encapsulated after May 1988; a tear on p. [28] has not been repaired. The unprotected sheets show signs of wear and fraying along the edges. The sheets were folded in the center horizontally.
Measurements
The sheets are of unequal width and measure approximately 28.0 x 21.5–23.5 cm. Although, the individual sheets in each typescript are of different sizes, they are the same size for each sheet; for example, pp. [19] are the same size in MS V.B.12.a.i and 12.a.ii.
Pagination
The sheets were paginated “1)”–”28)” in the lower left margin in lead pencil and also stamped pp. “103”–”130″ in the upper right margin in black ink (therefore, this printers’ pagination is a continuation of the stamped page numbers on Buffalo MS V.B.11.a.i) . The corner of p. [113], where the number was stamped, was torn and “113” was written in the left corner in pencil, probably by the printer.
Contents
The manuscript is a complete typescript of the ” Oxen of the Sun ” episode, comprised of mixed top and bottom copies of what were at least 4 complete typescripts (a top copy and 3 bottom copies), of which 3 other partial other copies survive (Buffalo MS V.B.12.a.ii and 12.a.iii and a copy at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee). The typescript was not prepared entirely from the Rosenbach (faircopy) manuscript version of the episode, though its precise relationship to the Rosenbach manuscript is unclear (see CSE 1745). The Little Review and the first placards of Ulysses were each set from different copies of the typescript; this was the 1921 printers’ copy of the typescript. Only the first installment of the “Oxen of the Sun” episode appeared in the September-December 1920 issue of The Little Review (VII.3), pp. 81–92 (14.0001–0400) and no further installment of Ulysses appeared in serialized form. The text on the pages is as follows:

Dating
The typescript was prepared in June 1920 in Trieste and revised by Joyce for The Little Review in black ink and then further revised in Paris also in black ink by late October 1921 for the printing of Ulysses .
Other Markings
Page [1] of the typescript is headed with the Roman numeral “XIV” in pencil and crossed out in red crayon. The notation ” debut chapitre ” was written in the upper center margin on p. [1] in pencil, probably by the printer. There are Darantiere printers’ markings in lead pencil and blue crayon, including printers’ signatures, on all of the pages, except on pp. [3], [11], [16], [17], [18], [22], [24] and [28]. There are black ink smudges in the margins of pp. [8], [16], [17] and [27], rust stains from two paperclips on pp. [17v] and [18v] and water stains in the right margins of pp. [18]–[27].

This manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 14.171–198.
