V.B.10.a.i

Partial Printers’ Typescript of the “Cyclops” (12) Episode for The Little Review and Ulysses (1919)

Material Description and Collation

The manuscript consists of 24 loose sheets of paper, which Spielberg described as “thin” typing paper, with corrections and additions in Joyce’s hand in black ink on all of the pages. All of the pages are single-spaced typewritten black ink bottom (carbon) copies; all the versos are blank, except for p. [22v], which has a few notations (examples of instructions to the printers) in red crayon and black ink. The sheets were all cleaned, de-acidified and encapsulated (but only the top copy typescript sheets were also backed with protective paper) in May 1988.

Measurements

Pages [1], [2], [11] and [12] measure 27.0 x 21.5 cm. and pp. [13]–[22] and [24]–[33] measure approximately 27.5 x 21.7 cm.

Pagination

Except for p. [1], the typist paginated the sheets “2.”, “11.”– “22.” and “24.”– “33.” in the upper center margin of each page; pp. [28]–[33] were paginated by the typist as “27”–”32″ and then corrected to “28”–”33″ in black ink. The sheets were paginated “1)”, “2)”, “11)”–”22)” and “24)”–”33)” in the lower left margin in lead pencil and also stamped “49”, “50”, “59”–”70″ and “72”–”81″ in the upper right margin in black ink (therefore, this pagination is a continuation of the stamped page numbers of Buffalo MS V.B.9), possibly by the printer .

Contents

The manuscript is a partial typescript of the “Cyclops” episode, comprised of mixed top and bottom copies of what were at least 3 complete typescripts (a top copy and 2 bottom copies), of which another partial copy survives (Buffalo MS V.B.10.a.ii, which also includes a page of the typescript that is missing from this copy). The typescript was prepared from the Rosenbach (faircopy) manuscript version of the episode. The Little Review and the first placards of Ulysses were each set from different copies of the typescript. The Little Review copy is not known to be extant and this copy (complete at the time) was the 1921 printers’ copy. The “Cyclops” episode appeared in the November 1919, December 1919, January 1920 and March 1920 issues of The Little Review (VI.7, VI.8, VI.9 and VI.10), pp. 38–54 (12.0001–0779), pp. 50–60 (12.0780–1265), pp. 53–61 (12.1266–1675) and pp. 54–60 (12.1676–-1918), respectively. There are also some scribal corrections to the typescript, possibly by Frank Budgen. The text on the pages is as follows:

Dating

The typescript was prepared in July 1919 in Zurich and revised by Joyce for The Little Review in black ink and then further revised in Paris also in black ink by late September 1921 for the printing of Ulysses .

Other Markings

Page [1] of the typescript is headed with the Roman numeral “XII” in pencil and crossed out in blue crayon. The notation “debut chapitre” was written in the upper center margin on p. [1] in lead pencil and “fin episode” was written in purple pencil at the end of the typescript on p. [33], probably by the printer. There are Darantiere printers’ marking, including printers’ signatures, on all of the pages, except on pp. [1], [13], [17], [20] and [27]. There is a rust stain from a paper clip in the upper left margin of pp. [1] and [33] and there are smudges in black ink on p. [26]. The leaves were folded in the center horizontally. During conservation, therefore after the manuscript’s publication in the JJA , the sheets were marked “V B 10 a, 1″–”V B 10 a, 24” in the lower right corner in pencil.

Publication

This manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 13.144–168.

Notes

There are 3 pre-Rosenbach manuscripts for the “Cyclops” episode: and earlier proto-draft (Buffalo MS V.A.8 and NLI MS 36,639/10) and a later copy of several fragments (Buffalo MS V.A.6). The first placards of the episode were set in late September 1921.
