V.B.14.a.i

Complete Typescript of the "Eumaeus" (16) Episode for Ulysses (1921)

Material Description and Collation

The manuscript consists of 32 loose sheets of thin typing paper, with corrections and additions in Joyce’s hand in black ink on all of the pages, except on pp. [1] [3], [10], [14], [15], [18], [26] and [32]. All of the pages are single-spaced typewritten black ink bottom (carbon) copies; all the versos are blank.

Title

On p. [1], " ULYSSES | III " is typed in the center of the page, and "Part" was added in pencil to read: " ULYSSES | ^Part^ III ". "JAMES JOYCE | 5 Boulevard Raspail | Paris" is also typed in the lower right corner, as on the Rosenbach manuscript version of the episode. Page [2] is erroneously titled " Chapter III " in the upper margin.

Measurements

The sheets are of unequal width and measure approximately 28.0 x 20.5–23.0 cm.

Pagination

Pages [3]–[32] were paginated by the typist "- 2 -"–"- 31 -" in the upper center margin; pages [1] and [2] are not paginated .

Contents

The manuscript is a complete typescript of the " Eumaeus " episode, comprised of only bottom (carbon) copies of what were 4 complete typescripts (a top copy and 3 bottom copies), of which 3 other partial other copies survive (Buffalo MS V.B.14.a.ii–iv). The typescript was prepared from the Rosenbach (faircopy) manuscript version of the episode. The emendations Joyce made on this copy of the typescript also appear on the corresponding pages of MSS V.B.14.a.ii–iv. The text on the pages is as follows:

Dating

The typescript was prepared in February 1921 in Paris and revised by Joyce in black ink by 8 December 1921 for the printing of Ulysses . ( See Joyce to Frank Budgen; end of February 1921; LI 159 ).

Publication

Only pp. [2], [9], [14], [15], [16] and [20]–[24] of this manuscript have been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 15.370, 378, 385, 386, 387 and 391–396.

Notes

There are 3 perforations in the left margins of all of the sheets and rust stains on p. [1], where the manuscript was previously fastened together. There is some blue ribbon typescript on pp. [10] and [17]. There are 2 pre-Rosenbach manuscript levels: the earlier is the so-called "Eumeo" manuscript, which was sold at auction by Sotheby’s London to an anonymous private collector in July 2001, and only the second part of the later draft level is extant (Buffalo MS V.A.21).1 The first placards of the "Eumaeus" episode were set in early December 1921.
