Complete Typescript of the First Part of the "Penelope" (18) Episode for Ulysses (1921)


Material Description and Collation

The manuscript consists of 27 loose sheets of thin typing paper, with corrections and additions in Joyce’s hand in black ink on all of the pages. All of the pages are double-spaced typewritten purple ink bottom (carbon) copies; the versos are blank.


Title

" Penelope " is typed in the center on p. [1].


Measurements

The sheets measure approximately 27.0 x 21.0 cm., except p. [10] that measures approximately 27.5 x 21.3 cm. and p. [13] that measure approximately 25.5 x 20.0 cm.


Pagination

Pages [2]–[5] were paginated by the typist "2"–"5"; p. [6] was paginated " 6 " and pp. [7]–[27] were paginated by the typist "7"–"27", all in the upper left corner; p. [1] is not paginated .

The manuscript is a complete typescript of the first 5 "sentences" of the " Penelope " episode, comprised of only bottom (carbon) copies of what were at least 3 complete typescript copies (a top copy and 2 bottom copies). The top (original) ribbon copy of this typescript are at the Huntington Library (HM 41122) and Buffalo MS V.B.16.a.ii is another, partial bottom (carbon) copy. The typescript was prepared from the Rosenbach (faircopy) manuscript version of the episode. The emendations Joyce made on this copy of the typescript also appear on the Huntington Library copy and on MS V.B.16.a.ii, but he made further emendations only on those copies of the typescript. Dating

The typescript was prepared from 16 to 25 August 1921 by Robert McAlmon in Paris and revised by Joyce in black ink by 17 October 1921 for the printing of Ulysses ( see CSE 1886 ).


Other Markings

The letter "B" was written in pencil in the upper left corner on p. [1].


Publication

Only p. [22] of this manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 16.321; the other sheets have not been reproduced.


Notes

There are paper clip markings on pp. [1], [26] and [27]. The sheets were folded in the center horizontally. NLI MS 36,639/14 is a pre-Rosenbach manuscript version of the episode. The first placards were set in mid October 1921.
