Complete Printers’ Typescript of the Second Part of the "Penelope" (18) Episode for Ulysses (1921)


Material Description and Collation

The manuscript consists of 23 loose sheets of typing paper, watermarked "LINEN PAPER | LAFUMA BERTHOLET & NAVARRE | VOIRON", with corrections and additions in Joyce’s hand in black ink and pencil on all of the pages, except on p. [16]. Pages [1]–[6] are top (original) copies in blue ink and pp. [7]–[23] are top (original) copies in blue ink; all are typewritten and double-spaced and the versos are blank.


Measurements

The sheets measure approximately 26.8 x 20.7 cm.


Pagination

The typists paginated the sheets "1"–"6", "I"–"8", "I", "2", "I"–"3", "3^bis^" and "4"–"6" by the in the upper right corner (pp. [19] and [20] were both paginated "3" so "bis" was added in pencil beside the page number on p. [20]; this does not appear on the JJA reproduction). Pages [1]–[16] were also paginated "28"–"43" in pencil in the upper right corner and pp. [17]–[19] were also paginated "44"–"47", "47bis", "48" and "49" in pencil in the upper left corner.


Contents

The manuscript is a complete typescript of the final 3 "sentences" of the " Penelope " episode, comprised of 2 top (original) copies of what were at least 2 complete typescript copies (see MS V.B.16.b.ii). Buffalo MS V.B.16.b.ii is another complete bottom (carbon) copy. Pages [1]–[16] were prepared from the Rosenbach (faircopy) manuscript version of the episode and pp. [17]–[23] were prepared from Buffalo MS V.A.20, by at least two different typists on two different typewriters (see CSE 1888). This is the printers’ copy of the typescript. The text on the pages is as follows:

Dating

The typescript was prepared September 1921 in Paris and revised by Joyce in black ink by 17 October 1921 for the printing of Ulysses .


Other Markings

Joyce wrote a note to the printer in the upper margin on p. [17]: "La fin du Dernier episode. Contiuez de suite après les autres feuilles sans intervalle en commencant un noveau paragraph" in lead pencil. There are Darantiere printers’ marking, including printers’ signatures on pp. [1], [9], [17] and [23]. There are lines in blue crayon around the word "bed" in the last line of the typescript on p. [3].


Publication

The manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 16.327–349.


Notes

The sheets were folded in the center horizontally. There are paper clip markings on pp. [3], [4] and [23v] and black ink smudges on pp. [6] and [10]–[15]. NLI MS 36,639/14 is a pre-Rosenbach manuscript version of the "Penelope" episode. The first placards were set in mid October 1921.
