V.B.3.a.ii

V.B.3.a.ii [V.B.3.a.]: Partial Duplicate Earlier Typescript of the “Calypso” (4) Episode for The Little Review (1918)

Material Description and Collation

The manuscript consists of 3 loose sheets of paper, of which Spielberg described pp. [1] and [2] as “heavier” typing paper. The sheets are single-spaced typewritten purple ink bottom (carbon) copies; the versos are blank. Spielberg notes that (together with MS V.B.3.b) these pages were originally “held together with a gold-colored paper fastener on the top left corner (first sheet detached from fastener) (52).” The fastener is no longer with the manuscript and the perforations it made have not been repaired. The sheets were cleaned, de-acidified, backed with protective paper and encapsulated in May 1988.

Title

“Episode IV” and below it ” Ulysses IV” were written in the upper center margin on p. [1] in pencil, presumably by the printer.

Measurements

The sheet measures 27.4 x 21.1 cm.

Pagination

The typist paginated pp. [2] and [8] “- 2 -” and “- 8 -“, respectively, in the center of the upper margin in 1918. The first page is paginated “(1)” in the center of the upper margin in pencil.

Contents

The manuscript consists of copies of the first 2 pages of MS V.B.3.a.i and another page from this earlier typing of the episode that is not part of that copy. Joyce made corrections and additions on p. [1] in black ink and in black and blue inks on pp. [2] and [8]. The text on the pages is as follows :

MS V.B.3.a.ii Ulysses 1922 (1992) / 1984

pp. [3]–[7]: [“3″–”7”] Missing
p. [8]: p. “8” 60.34–62.10 / 4.293–340
Undetermined number of pages Missing

Dating

The typescript was prepared in mid May 1918 (see Joyce to Weaver; 18 May 1918; LI 113).

Other Markings: There are markings in black crayon on p. [1] and horizontal lines in purple crayon near the lower left margin of each page.

Publication

This manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 12.261, 262 and 268.

Notes

There are no pre-Rosenbach manuscript versions of the “Calypso” or “Lotus Eaters” episodes. The first placards of “Calypso” were set in mid June 1921.
