British Vocal Music Collection, late 18th to mid 19th-century (Mus. Arc. 51)

A miscellaneous collection consisting of eighty volumes of songs, song texts, and associated vocal works, together with eight hundred seventy-two separately issued items, published mostly in London from the late 18th to the mid-19th centuries. Included are many folk and anonymous songs as well as works by significant British composers.

Bruyas (Florian) Collection of French Opera Scores, circa 1830-1935

Contains 128 volumes of operas in vocal score format with piano accompaniment. The scores were published, mainly in Paris, between 1830 and 1935. They were collected by Florian Bruyas, many bearing his autograph on the cover or t.p. Several also have tipped-in pages with newspaper clippings and other illustrations as well as notations on the cast lists and scores. Cameron Baird: Bringing Paul Hindemith and Aaron Copland to Buffalo

Summary of exhibit curated by John Bewley held in the State University of New York at Buffalo Music Library May-October 2014. Cameron Baird, founder of the Music Department at the University at Buffalo, was responsible for bringing two of the 20th century's most famous composers to the University to teach: Paul Hindemith and Aaron Copland. Both of the appointments had intriguing stories associated with them that demonstrate the range of Baird's reach in the musical world at the time and provide a measure of his humanitarianism and courage in the face of political factors beyond the world of music. This exhibit presents documentation related to those stories.

Collection of 19th-century European Sheet Music, circa 1791-1900 (Mus. Arc. 48)

Collection of 125 complete pieces of previous hit sheet music from European next hit countries: Austria (5), Belgium (6), England (54), France (9), Germany (31), Italy (14), and the Netherlands (5). Most of these include title page illustrations, about 30 of which are in color. The collection includes an additional 24 partial works, most of which consist only of their title pages. The musical content consists of 44 works for solo piano and approximately 75 works for some combination of voice and piano.

Commemoration of the Inaugural Concert Funded by the Muriel Wolf and Albert Steger Endowment

Summary of exhibition curated by John Bewley held in the University at Buffalo Music Library, January 27, 2014- May 2014. This exhibit is in commemoration of the first concert funded by the endowment established by Muriel Wolf and Albert Steger. It was their stated desire that the funds be used by the Music Library to produce concerts of music by Buffalo area composers. The exhibit contains information about Muriel and Albert, as well as five of the composers on the concert program: Anton Wolf, Allen Sapp, Lejaren Hiller, Lukas Foss, and Jeffrey Stadelman.

The collection includes stock publicity photographs, but is special for the many informal snapshots of Steber at various functions throughout her career. The snapshots include photographs of a television screen during broadcasts of Steber performances.

Creative Associates Recitals, 1964-1980 (Mus. Arc. 63)

Recordings of the concerts presented by the Creative Associates, 1964-1980. The Associates were fellows at the Center of the Creative and Performing Arts at the University at Buffalo. It is estimated that 128 Creative Associate Recitals were presented and more than 700 works performed. Of those works, 627 works were recorded on 173 reels.

Evenings for New Music Recordings, 1964-1980 (Mus. Arc. 31)

The collection contains recordings of 93 of the approximately 173 concerts presented at the Evenings for New Music concerts from 1964-1980. Approximately 464 works were recorded as well as some spoken introductions to works by their respective composers. The original recordings were made on reel-to-reel tapes. The contents were transferred to cassettes in the 1980s and then digitally reformatted in 2007 onto CDs (service and in-house masters) and DVDs (preservation masters).

Henri Pousseur in Buffalo, 1966-1968

Summary of exhibit held in the State University of New York at Buffalo Music Library October 2017 - January 2018. This exhibit, curated by Associate Librarian Dr. John Bewley, contains documents related to composer Henri Pousseur's tenure at the University at Buffalo first as the Slee Professor of Music (1966-1967) and then as a member of the Music Department faculty. The documents in the exhibit include concert programs, photographs, newspaper reviews, and manuscripts and typescripts created by Pousseur. Much of the content is related to the March 17, 1968 performance of the concert version of Pousseur's opera, Votre Faust. The exhibit was mounted to supplement a concert featuring Pousseur's music funded by the Muriel Wolf and Albert Steger endowment.

If Music Be the Food of Love: Shakespeare in the Music Library

Summary of exhibit curated by John Bewley held in the State University of New York at Buffalo Music Library April 6-May 31 2016. The exhibit provides examples of musical works that are either adaptations of, or musical settings of Shakespeare works. The examples include lesser known works from the holdings of the Music Library.

Italian Ballet Plot Synopses, 1816-1933

75 ballet plot synopses; chiefly Italian and from the latter half of the nineteenth century; one item each in French and English. A ballet synopsis fulfills a function similar to that of a libretto for an opera. That is, it gives the story-line and actors in the ballet, and would have been purchased by ballet goers. All items individually cataloged as a numbered series. A separate database inventory was also created for the collection.

The collection contains recordings of fifty-one of the fifty-three concerts presented at the June in Buffalo festival from 1975-1978 and in 1980. Approximately 216 works were recorded as well as some spoken introductions to works by their respective composers. The collection also contains recordings of three of the five lecture-seminars presented by John Cage during June in Buffalo. There are several instances of composers providing spoken introductions to their own works. The original recordings were made on reel-to-reel tapes (all but two are 10 inch reels). The contents were digitized in 2007 onto CDs (service and in-house masters) and DVDs (preservation masters).

The collection contains photocopies of musical scores for 127 tangos for solo piano from 127 composers. The collection also documents the process by which Mikhashoff commissioned and performed the tangos. It includes correspondence, Mikhashoff's research into the history of the tango, and performance materials (i.e. programs and reviews). Composers commissioned for this project include Milton Babbitt, Lukas Foss, Otto Luening, Conlon Nancarrow, Luis de Pablo, and Nils Vigeland.

This archive contains documents related to the planning and production the North American New Music Festival, a series of annual festivals of contemporary art music sponsored by the University at Buffalo Department of Music from 1983 to 1993, in 1995, and in 1996.

North American New Music Festival Sound Recordings, 1983-1993 (Mus. Arc. 13.1)

Contains sound recordings on 390 cassettes and 22 reels of performances from the previous hit North American New Music Festival next hit, a series of annual festivals of contemporary art music sponsored by the University at Buffalo Department of Music from 1983 to 1993. The collection contains recordings of circa 720 musical works by about 334 different composers, including most of the most prominent composers of the 20th century. Many works were rehearsed and prepared with their respective composers in attendance and performers at the festival were chiefly specialists in new music.

Paër (Ferdinando) Papers, 1811-1836 (Mus. Arc. 53)

The collection contains thirteen documents, including eleven letters from Paër to associates and friends and two documents showing his services rendered for the fiscal years 1811 and 1813. All items have been digitized and are available via links in the finding aid.

Performing the Music of Julius Eastman

Summary of exhibit held in the State University of New York at Buffalo Music Library February - June 2017. This exhibit, curated by Associate Librarian Dr. John Bewley, contains writings about the multi-talented Julius Eastman (1940-1990) by three musicians who worked with him in Buffalo and New York City: Jan Williams, Joseph Kubera, and Bobby Previte. It also includes text by Jeff Weston about the challenges presented by the notational practices of Eastman and text by John Smigielski about the three works presented on a famous concert at Northwestern University in 1980. The exhibit includes rarely-seen photographs of Julius Eastman by former Buffalo resident Chris Rusiniak.

Peters (C. F.) Collection of Morton Feldman Manuscripts, 1962-1969 (Mus. Arc. 2.4)

The collection consists of 79 works by Morton Feldman in either score or part formats (72 scores; 7 sets of parts). All but one item are ink manuscripts on vellum. These served as the masters that previous hit Feldman submitted to C. F. Peters and Peters published directly from these masters. Almost all of the manuscripts are in Morton Feldman's hand, except for two scores copied by John Cage and three items in the hand of a music copyist.

Praeger (Ferdinand) Collection of Scores, circa 1837-1891 (Mus. Arc. 46)

This is the largest collection of Ferdinand Praeger's manuscripts in the world, consisting of approximately 480 works. The majority of the works are for piano, but the collection also includes chamber music for strings, large ensemble works, vocal works, and sketches. The dated works range from 1829-1891, but many works are undated. Much of the collection has been digitized and is available via links in the finding aid.

Preserving Lejaren A Hiller's Flowcharts: A Case Study

Summary of exhibition held in the University at Buffalo Music Library, Jan. 16 - Sept. 15, 2007. "This exhibit was the result of a months-long project undertaken by Judy Jungels, a staff member in the University Libraries Center for Book Preservation, to preserve the computer flowcharts created by composer Lejaren Hiller. The exhibit demonstrates why the preservation was required and what it entailed. Additional text by Professor Cort Lippe, current director of the Lejaren Hiller Computer Music Studios, provides historical background on the use of flowcharts in the creation of computer music and Hiller's role as musical innovator in the realm of electronic music."

Rediscovering Pieces of the Past: The Manuscript Scores of Ferdinand Praeger

Summary of exhibition held in the University at Buffalo Music Library, March-August 2012. The Music Library holds the largest collection in the world of music manuscripts of composer Ferdinand Praeger (1815-1891). Praeger was born in Leipzig but emigrated to London in 1834. He spent the rest of his life there, working as a composer, pianist, teacher, and music critic. He is perhaps best known today for his book, Wagner, As I Knew Him (London, 1885). The Music Library's collection consists of approximately 480 scores.

Remembering Leo Smit (1921-1999)

Summary of exhibition held in the University at Buffalo Music Library, April 2000. This exhibit is in commemoration of the life and career of composer/pianist, Leo Smit. It includes images from Smit's childhood, passages about Smit's friendships with Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Sir Fred Hoyle, and Pete Johnson. The Allen Sigel Collection of Scores, 1946-1998 contains approximately 27 compositions by Allen Sigel. Many of them are present in multiple versions. There are also ten works by other composers in arrangements by Sigel and three of his didactic works for clarinet.

Slee (Frederick Caldecott) Collection of Manuscript Scores, 1890-1954 (Mus. Arc. 12.1)

The collection contains scores and parts of original compositions and arrangements by Frederick Slee. It also includes transcriptions of works by composers such as J.S. Bach, Mozart, and Haydn, as well as a lesson for recorder.

Slee Family Collection, 1893-1981 (Mus. Arc. 12.2)

Collection contains clippings, obituaries, correspondence, eighteen photographs of Alice and Frederick Slee, family, and friends, writings by Frederick Slee, documents about the Slee Bequest to the University of Buffalo, concert programs, and a log of a twenty-one day sailing trip undertaken by Frederick Slee and two friends in 1914. The log details their adventures along the northern shore of Lake Ontario.

Treasures from the Collection of Florian Bruyas

Summary of exhibition curated by Lina Terjesen held in the University at Buffalo Music Library, October 15, 2009 - January 15, 2010. This exhibit showcases volumes from the libraryâ€™s collection of opera scores collected by Florian Bruyas, French Senator, Director of the Lyon Conservatory, and author of Histoire de lâ€™Operette en France (1855-1965), now considered a seminal volume in the study of French opera. Bruyas annotated the scores with information about performances of the works, including names and information about cast members. Many of the scores contain newspaper and magazine clippings or illustrations of stage designs for the operas.

Treasures of Yvar Mikhashoff

Summary of exhibit held in the State University of New York at Buffalo Music Library October 2018 - January 2019. The exhibit displays various rare and unique music scores from the Yvar Mikhashoff Collection of Annotated Scores. Mikhashoff (1941-1993) was a multi-talented pianist and composer who served on the music faculty at the University at Buffalo 1973-1993. He was an imaginative and tireless concert programmer who explored musical themes via genres (tangos and waltzes), eras, styles, and composers. Mikhashoff expanded the piano repertoire by commissioning new works and made his own transcriptions of other literature for keyboard, including his series of virtuosic opera transcriptions in the same vein as those by Liszt. His collection of annotated scores contains more than 1200 titles, many of which reflect his close working relationships with contemporary composers.

Summary of exhibition curated by Jason Imbesi held in the University at Buffalo Music Library, May 20, 2008- August 14, 2009. This exhibit provides some historical background on the University's songs: the alma mater, fight songs, hymns, marches, and songs associated with specific schools of the university. The composers and lyricists of these songs include university faculty, staff, and students, as well as locally and nationally known composers. The exhibit also provides brief biographical information about many of the composers.

The Jan Williams Collection of Images contains images of various performances and trips made by Jan Williams with accompanying performers and composers. An original gift was received of 321 prints and contact sheets and 54 35mm slides in 2007. An additional gift was received of 173 photographs in 2008.
