“Crossing to the Coast” (1928)
The manuscript is a picture post card of the church of St. Peter in Avignon, France, with “AVIGNON – Église St-Pierre (Xe Siècle)” printed at the top of the image on the recto, which Joyce sent to Sylvia Beach, with writing in Joyce’s hand in black ink on the other side.
Joyce titled the verse “Crossing to the Coast | (Air: Killalloo)” above the text.
The manuscript measures 13.7 x 8.8 cm.
The manuscript is a limerick about Joyce.
Joyce dated this manuscript 21 April 1928, Avignon.
This manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 1.338 and appears in Spielberg (p. 22) and in JJSB (#140; p. 136) and then was published in PSW, p. 137.
Joyce sent this manuscript to Sylvia Beach; it is also listed as Buffalo MS X.C.168; Joyce to Beach; 21 April 1928.
