V.B.15.a
Collateral Typescript of Extracts of the "Ithaca" (17) Episode for Valery Larbaud’s Reading at the "Séance Consacrée a James Joyce" (1921)
Material Description and Collation
The manuscript consists of 73 loose sheets of typing paper, of which pp. [1]–[26] and [34]–[73] are watermarked "LINEN PAPER | LAFUMA BERTHOLET & NAVARRE | VOIRON"; pp. [27]–[33] are not watermarked and are thinner. There are no corrections or additions. At least two typists prepared the typescript on two separate typewriters (see CSE 1889–1890); pp. [1]–[33] are typewritten double-spaced top (original) blue ribbon copies and pp. [34]–[73] are top (original) purple ribbon copies; all the versos are blank.
Titles
Joyce titled the sections in pencil: p. [1] "street"; p. [2] "kitchen"; p. [24] "Garden" and p. [34] "parlour".
Measurements
The sheets measure approximately 27.0 x 20.5 cm.
Pagination
Pages [1]–[19] are paginated "1"–"19", p. [20] is not numbered, pp. [21]–[44] are paginated "20"–"43" and pp. [45]–[73] are paginated "46"–"74" by Joyce in the upper right corner in lead pencil.
Contents
The manuscript consists of a selection of questions and answers (one question and answer per page, except for p. [46], which is a continuation of the answer on p. [45]) that were made at Joyce’s instructions for Valery Larbaud’s "séance consacrée a James Joyce" on 7 December 7 1921 at Adrienne Monnier’s book shop, La Maison des Amis des Livres. Pages [1]–[33] were prepared from the selection of questions-and-answers on the first typescript (see MS V.B.15.c, pp. [10], [11], [32], [40], [41v], [46], [49], [51], [53], [64], [65], [78] and [79], where the corresponding questions-and-answers are tagged with asterisks in green crayon, probably by Joyce); pp. [34]–[44] were prepared from the revised text of the questions-and-answers on "Ithaca" copybook II (green), pp. "8"–"20", where the corresponding questions-and-answers are tagged with asterisks in green crayon, probably by Joyce, and pp. [45]–[43] were prepared from the revised text of the questions-and-answers on "Ithaca" copybook I (blue), pp. "17"–"32", where the corresponding questions-and-answers are tagged with asterisks in red crayon, probably by Joyce. The text on the pages is as follows:
