V.B.5
Complete Printers’ Typescript of the “Aeolus” (7) Episode for The Little Review and Ulysses (1917)
Material Description and Collation
The manuscript consists of 17 loose sheets of paper, which Spielberg described as “thin” typing paper, with corrections and additions in Joyce’s hand in black ink on all of the pages, except on p. [17]. They are all single-spaced typewritten black ink bottom (carbon) copies, except for the last line on p. [1], which is typed in blue ribbon; all the versos are blank. The sheets were all cleaned, de-acidified and encapsulated in May 1988.
Measurements
The sheets measure approximately 28.0 x 21.5 cm.
Pagination
The sheets were paginated “(1″–”(17” in the upper right margin in pencil, probably in 1918, possibly by Joyce, and later “78”–”94″ in 1921 for the printing of Ulysses , also possibly by Joyce . The 1921 printers’ pagination of this typescript for Ulysses was continued directly from the “Hades” typescript (MS V.B.4, only pp. “63,” “64,” “67”–”72″ and “74”–”77″ of which are known to be extant).
Contents
The manuscript is a complete typescript of the “Aeolus” episode, of which no other copies are known to be extant, although a top copy must have been prepared as well as probably at least another bottom copy. The typescript was not prepared from the Rosenbach (faircopy) manuscript version of the episode but presumably from a lost working draft. The “Aeolus” episode appeared in the October 1918 issue of The Little Review (V.6), pp. 26–51. Joyce further revised the typescript page in black ink for the printing of Ulysses . The text on the pages is as follows:

Dating
The typescript was prepared in mid May 1918 in Zurich and further revised by Joyce in Paris by August 1921 in black ink for the printing of Ulysses (see Joyce to Weaver; 18 May 1918; LI 113).
Other Markings
The notation “nouveau chapitre” was written in pencil in the center upper margin on p. [1], surrounded by pencil lines on all sides to form a box, probably by a printer. There are Darantiere printers’ marking on all of the pages. There are blue crayon markings around the lyrics on p. [1] (see Ulysses 113.34–35 / 7.0059–0060) and there is a horizontal red crayon line drawn at the end of the episode on p. [17]. There are water stains on p. [6]. The sheets were folded once horizontally at the center. During conservation, therefore after the manuscript’s publication in the JJA , the sheets were marked “V B 5, 1″–”V B 5, 17” in the lower right corner in pencil.
Publication
This manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 12.286–302.
Notes
No pre-Rosenbach manuscript version of the “Aeolus” episode is known to be extant. Though it is not known to be extant, there were some revisions on the copy of the typescript for The Little Review . Joyce added the episode’s distinctive crossheads on a copy of the first placards of the episode that were set in August 1921.
