V.B.10.a.ii
Partial Duplicate Typescript of the “Cyclops” (12) Episode for The Little Review (1919)
Material Description and Collation
The manuscript consists of 3 loose sheets of paper, which Spielberg described as “thin” typing paper, with some corrections and additions in Joyce’s hand in black ink on all of the pages. Pages [22] and [23] are black ribbon top (original) copies and p. [17] is a black ink bottom (carbon) copy; all are typewritten and single-spaced and the versos are blank. The sheets were all cleaned, de-acidified and encapsulated (but only the top copy typescript sheets were also backed with protective paper) in May 1988.
Measurements
The sheets measure approximately 27.5 x 21.7 cm.
Pagination
The typist paginated the sheets “17.”, “22. ” and “23.” in the upper center margin of each page and they are also paginated “199”, “204” and “205” in the lower right margin in black ink.
Contents
The manuscript is a partial duplicate bottom copy of what were at least 3 complete typescripts (a top copy and 2 bottom copies) of the “Cyclops” episode, of which another, more complete partial copy survives (Buffalo MS V.B.10.a.i). This copy of the typescript contains only those additions Joyce made for The Little Review publication in 1919. The text on the pages is as follows:

There are 3 pre-Rosenbach manuscripts for the “Cyclops” episode: and earlier proto-draft (Buffalo MS V.A.8 and NLI MS 36,639/10) and a later copy of several fragments (Buffalo MS V.A.6). The first placards of the episode were set in late September 1921.
