Work in Progress"/Finnegans Wake Notebook (1936)

Material Description

The notebook is a vertical metal spiral pocket notebook, bound in blue board covers. It is unlike any other of the "Work in Progress"/Finnegans Wake notebooks.
Joyce’s notes are in the following pencils and inks:

Writing Implement Manuscript Pages
Green ink: Front cover recto and pp. [29], [33], [34], [40], [41], [42], and [48]
Lead pencil: p. [19]
Blue ink: pp. [43] and [44]
Pink pencil: p. [48]

Some or all of the writing on pp. [19], [29], [48], [49], and [50] is upside down and vertical on the front cover recto and pp. [15]–[18], [28], [36], [37], [40], [43], and [44]. Some or all of the notes as well as the addresses on pp. [13], [14], [16], [17], [28], [49], and [50] are not in Joyce’s hand.

None of the entries are crossed through in colored crayons.

The manuscript now consists of 27 leaves (54 pages) of blue lined graph paper; 5 leaves (pp. [01]–[04] and [49]–[54]) as well as the back cover are detached from the notebook and an undetermined number of leaves were torn from the notebook and are missing. 37 of the extant pages, as well as the front cover recto, are inscribed; 17 are blank: pp. [20]–[27], [30], [31], [32], [35], [38], [39], [45], [46], and [47].

The manuscript measures 10.5 x 6.6 cm.

The pages are not numbered.

Joyce compiled this notebook in the summer of 1936 in Denmark (TD 33).
