***VI.G.7: "Work in Progress"/Finnegans Wake Galley Proofs: Partial Copy of the "Fourth Setting" for transition 13/Finnegans Wake III.2 (1928):

Material Description and Collation

The manuscript is a quarto sheet of pulp paper. It was printed only on one side and consists of 4 pages of printed text. The pages contain corrections and revisions in Thomas MacGreevy’s hand in black ink. The manuscript was cleaned, de-acidified, and encapsulated in May 1988 and backing tape was placed along the center folds.

Measurements

The manuscript measures 32.2 x 50.0 cm.

Pagination

Each page is numbered "17"–"20", respectively, in the center of the margins above the text block, in lead pencil, possibly by the printer. Page "17" is also marked "17 à 20 – A".

Contents

The manuscript is part of one of two copies of what the JJA refers to as the "fourth setting" of galley proofs for transition 13 (Summer 1928); this manuscript is continued from BL MS 47483, fs. 212r–219r. There is another copy of this manuscript: BL MS 47483, fs. 204r–211r, of which BL MS 47483, fs. 210v and 211r are copies of these pages and are reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 57.414 and 415. This copy of the galley proof was returned to the printer to set up the "fifth setting" of galley proofs for transition 13. See transition 13, 05.01–17.18 as well as FW 429.01–449.26.

JJA Draft Code

III.2A.1A/2D.1A/2C.1A.

Dating

The manuscript is date stamped "5 JUIN 1928" by the printer; Joyce also revised both copies of this setting of proof in June 1928.

Other Markings

The number "1" was written in green crayon in the top left corner of p. "17" and the letter "A" was written in green crayon below the first full paragraph on p. "19" and there is a mark in blue crayon to the right of the "A". The notation "3 of 6" was written in the bottom margin of p. "20" in lead pencil (this marking was probably made during the preservation process as an identifying number). There are lead pencil markings in the left margins of each page, possibly by the printers. There are initials in the bottom right corners of pp. "17" and "19" in lead pencil. Page "17" is stamped by Brulliard in the top left corner.

Publication

This manuscript has not been reproduced, but the remainder of this copy of this setting has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 57.398–405.
