*VI.H.5: "Work in Progress"/Finnegans Wake Page Proofs: Unmarked Copy of the First Setting of Proofs of "The Mookse and the Gripes" for Tales Told of Shem and Shaun/Finnegans Wake I.6 (1929):


Material Description and Collation

The manuscript consists of 13 sheets of thin wove paper, printed on only on one side in black ink (that is, the title and initial are not printed in red ink as they are in the published work); the pages are machine trimmed on all sides. There are no corrections or revisions. The text block is not evenly centered on pp. "2"–"13".


Measurements

The sheets measure 26.9 x 20.0 cm.


Pagination

The sheets are not paginated, but are numbered "1"–"13" in the lower left margin in pencil in an unidentified hand.

The manuscript is an unmarked copy of the first setting of proofs of the "The Mookse and Gripes" for Tales Told of Shem and Shaun (Paris: Black Sun Press, June 1929; Slocum and Cahoon A36). See Tales Told of Shem and Shaun, pp. 1–16 as well as FW 152.18–159.18.

Dating

The manuscript is undated but was probably set in April 1929; Joyce revised Yale MS 9.2 (JJA 47.201–208) in April 1929 as well.


Other Markings

There are traces of rust from a paper clip on p. "1".


Publication

This manuscript has not been reproduced, but the marked set at the Beinecke Library, Yale University, has been reproduced in black and white photo- facsimile on JJA 47.201–208.


Notes

The manuscript was enclosed in a heavy paper envelope on which Beach noted in blue crayon: "Proofs of Mookse and Gripes | Black Sun Press".
