IX.B.2.b [IX. B. 1. b.]: Miscellaneous Manuscripts: Dubliners:
Partial Page Proofs of the French Translation of "The Dead" for Gens de dublin as "Les Morts"(1923)
The manuscript consists of 18 sheets of printed page proofs on pulp paper (folded in half to form leaves, with four pages per sheet, though most of the sheets have since split into separate leaves), with corrections in purple ink, probably in Fernandez’s hand, on all pages, except for pp. 254, 257, 269, 270, 271, 276, 277, 290, 291, 296, 301, 307, 309, 315, 317 and 319.
The printed title "LES MORTS." appears on p. 249 and in the upper margin of every odd-numbered page and "Gens dE Dublin" is printed on all even-numbered pages.
The whole leaves measure 22.3 x 27.9 cm.
The pages are numbered "249"–"313" but p. [320] is not numbered.
The manuscripts are page proof of the first French translation by Yva Fernandez of the story "Les Morts" ("The Dead") for Gens de Dublin. There are corrections in purple ink on most pages, probably in Fernandez’s hand. These corrections were not incorporated in the text of the first edition of Gens de Dublin, translated by Yva Fernandez, Hélène Du Pasquier and Jacques-Paul Reynaud(Paris: Librarie Plon-Nourrit et Cie, 1926; pp. 249–319; Slocum and Cahoon D13).
Dated by the printer: 22 June 1923.
The sheets are date stamped on pp. 257, 273, 289 and 305 in purple ink.
This manuscript has not been reproduced.
Joyce’s story "Les Morts" was published as the fifteenth story in Gens de Dublin. There are rust stains from a paperclip on pp. 249 and [320].
