*VI.J.12: "Work in Progress"/Finnegans Wake Miscellaneous Manuscripts: Typescript Copy of a Draft of C.K. Ogden’s Preface for Tales Told of Shem and Shaun (1929)


Material Description and Collation

The manuscript consists of 8 sheets of single- and double-spaced typewritten black ribbon top (original) copies, watermarked "BRITISH BOND | SB". There are corrections in lead pencil and black ink (not in Joyce’s hand) on all the pages, except pp. "4." and "7."; the versos are blank. There is also a top sheet with the typescript that is headed "proof for Joyce" in an unidentified hand in lead pencil.


Titles

The first page of the typescript was headed: "P R E F A C E" by the typist.


Measurements

The manuscript measures approximately 20.2 x 33.0 cm.


Pagination

The typist numbered pp. [1]–[7] "1."–"7." in the bottom margin; p. [8] is not numbered.

The manuscript is an earlier version of the preface by C.K. Ogden for Tales Told of Shem and Shaun.


Dating

The manuscript was prepared before May 1929.


Other Markings

The typist appended "C.K. OGDEN." after the text on p. [8].

This manuscript has not been reproduced.


Notes

A title page is included with the manuscript, which is headed: "proof for Joyce" in the top margin in lead pencil; the sheet is otherwise blank. The manuscript was folded twice horizontally and there are perforations in the upper left corners of each sheet where they had been fastened together. The typescript was enclosed in an unsealed envelope on which Beach wrote in blue ink: "C K Ogden | proofs of preface for two tales | Crosby Black Sun Press". There is a letter with the manuscript from C.K. Ogden, Royal Societies Club, St. James’s Street, S.W.1 [London, England] to [Harry] Crosby. 4 May 1929. A.l.s.: 1l recto-verso.
