*VI.J.6: "Work in Progress"/Finnegans Wake Miscellaneous Manuscripts: Typescript Copy of the Front Matter for the Crosby Gaige Edition of Anna Livia Plurablle (1928)
The manuscript consists of 6 sheets of typewritten double- and single-spaced black ribbon top (original) copies, watermarked "ARTESIAN BOND", of which pp. [1], [3], and [4] are embossed with "THE SHELTON – NEW YORK". There are additions and corrections in lead pencil and orange crayon, presumably by the printer; the versos are blank.
The sheets are headed in lead pencil in an unidentified hand as follows: pp. [1] and [2]: "Halftitle"; p. [3]: "Title"; p. [4]: "Copyright"; p. [5]: "1st page | of introduction"; and p. [6]: "Halftitle".
The manuscript is probably the printer’s or the publisher’s mock-up of the front matter for Joyce’s approval. The arrangement of the front matter here does not coincide with the published work (see Slocum and Cahoon A32).
The manuscript measures approximately 13.3 x 18.6 cm.
Pages [1] and [2] and numbered "I" and "II" in the top right corner in orange crayon; pp. [3], [4], and [6] are numbered "2", "3", and "4" in the top right corner in orange crayon. Pages [1], [3], [4], and [6] are also numbered in the lower center margin "i", "iii", "iv", and "v" in lead pencil; p. [2] is further numbered "1" in a circle in the lower center margin in lead pencil. These paginations do not correspond to the published work.
The manuscript was prepared in 1928.
