Material Description and Collation

The manuscript is Joyce’s personal copy of Tales Told of Shem and Shaun (Paris: Black Sun Press, June 1929; Slocum and Cahoon A36), with just 4 emendations and corrections (on pp. 2, 21, and 54), probably in Joyce’s hand, in lead and purple pencils.

Measurements

The book measures 21.0 x 16.5 cm.

Pagination

The pages are numbered as in the published work.

The manuscript is a revised copy of Tales Told of Shem and Shem and Shaun, probably intended for the printer of Finnegans Wake (R. MacLehose and Co., The University of Glasgow Press). This document was not sent to the printer, therefore none of the revisions appear in Finnegans Wake. See FW 152.29, 285.22, 419.02, and 419.02.

JJA Draft Code

I.6§3.9’+ and III§1C.8’+ (the II.2§8 section is not included in the JJA draft code because Joyce presumably sent a (now missing) marked copy of Storiella As She Is Syung to the printers of Finnegans Wake).

Dating

Tales Told of Shem and Shaun was published in 1929, but Joyce probably made these revisions between 1932 and 1936.

Publication

None of this manuscript has been reproduced, but for "The Mookse and the Gripes” see JJA 47.303–318 where another, more substantially marked version of the Tales Told of Shem and Shaun(BL MS 47475, fs. 249r–256v) has been reproduced.

Notes
