Negative Photostats in Duplicate of a Section of the Rosenbach (Faircopy) Manuscript of the "Circe" (15) Episode (1920)


Material Description and Collation

The manuscript consists of 10 pages of photostats in duplicate (20 pages in total).


Measurements

The sheets of the Rosenbach manuscript measure approximately 20.3 x 16.5 cm., the text on the photostat is enlarged and measures 23.0 x 17.7 cm. and the photostat sheets themselves measure 30.7 x 20 cm.


Pagination

These copies of the Rosenbach manuscript are paginated "73"–"78", "78a", "79", "79a" and "80" in the lower left margin in pencil.


Contents

The manuscript is a negative photostat of a section of the Rosenbach (faircopy) Manuscript of "Circe," from which a holograph transcription was made (Buffalo MS V.B.13.b). The text on the pages is as follows:

Dating

The photostats were prepared in late April 1921 in New York by John Quinn at Joyce’s request (see The Man from New York: John Quinn and His Friends , pp. 486–488).


Other Markings

There are rust stains from a paperclip on p. [1] on only one of the copies.

This manuscript has not been reproduced in the JJA but the original manuscript pages were reproduced in color photo-facsimile in the Appendix of Ulysses: A Facsimile of the Manuscript, vol. II (New York: Octagon Books, 1975), n.p.
