V.B.3.a.i.

V.B.3.a.i [V.B.3.b.]: Partial Earlier Typescript of the “Calypso” (4) Episode for The Little Review and Ulysses (1918)

Material Description and Collation

The manuscript consists of 2 loose sheets of paper. They are single-spaced typewritten purple ink bottom (carbon) copies; the versos are blank. The sheets were cleaned, de-acidified, backed with protective paper and encapsulated in May 1988.

Measurements

The sheets measure 27.4 x 21.1 cm.

Pagination

The typist paginated the sheets “I” and “- 2 -” in the center of the upper margin in 1918. The sheets were also paginated “41” and “42” in the lower right margin in black ink, possibly by Joyce or Beach in 1921 for the printing of Ulysses .

The pagination of the typescripts for the printers of Ulysses is continued here from the “Proteus” typescript (MS V.B.2; pp. “28”–”40″, only p. “26” of which is known to be extant). Although no copy of the “Lotus Eaters” typescript is known to be extant, on at least one copy the pagination for the printer of Ulysses was continued sequentially from the “Calypso” to the “Hades” typescripts.

Contents

This typescript was prepared from the Rosenbach (faircopy) manuscript of the episode for its first publication in The Little Review but some of its pages were retyped (see MS V.B.3.b). The 1921 printers’ copy was made up of a mixed set of copies of the earlier and later typings of the episode, of which these are the only extant pages. MS V.B.3.a.ii contains duplicate copies of these 2 pages (as well as p. “26”) of this earlier typing. This typescript contains emendations for Ulysses in Joyce’s hand in black ink, which do not appear on the corresponding 2 pages of MS V.B.3.a.ii. The typescript copy from which The Little Review was set is not known to be extant. The “Calypso” episode appeared in the June 1918 issue of The Little Review (V.2 [incorrectly numbered VI.2]), pp. 39–52. The text on the pages is as follows :

MS V.B.3.a.i Ulysses 1922 (1992) / 1984
p. [1]: “I” & “41” [53].01–18 / 4.001–019
p. [2]: “2” & “42” [53].19–55.9 / 4.021–075
pp. [3]–[8]: [“3″–”8” & “43”–”48″] Missing
Undetermined number of pages Missing

Dating

The typescript was prepared probably in February 1918 and further revised by Joyce in Paris by 11 June 1921 in black ink for the printing of Ulysses .

Other Markings

There are markings in black crayon on p. [1] and a horizontal line in red crayon parallel with the last line of the typescript in the left margin on p. [2]. There are smudges in black and purple ink on both pages.

Publication

This manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 12.270–271.

Notes

No pre-Rosenbach manuscript versions of the “Calypso” or “Lotus Eaters” episodes are known to be extant. The first placards of “Calypso” were set in mid June 1921.
