First Part of the Printers’ Copy of the Typescript (with First and Second Overlay) of the "Circe" episode for Ulysses
Material Description and Collation
The manuscript consists of 53 sheets of thin typing paper. All of the pages are doubled-spaced typewritten black ink bottom (carbon) copies, except pp. [2], [9], [12], [31], [32], [37] [40], [42], [44], [45], [46] and [52], which are purple ribbon top (original) copies; all the versos are blank. There are corrections and additions in Joyce’s hand (and in a few instances in Sylvia Beach’s hand, presumably based on Joyce’s instructions) in black ink on all of the pages, except on pp. [2], [4], [7], [8], [49], [51], [53] and [54], and in blue ink on pp. [5]–[8], [10], [14], [15] and [16].
Measurements
The sheets measure approximately 27.0 x 21.0 cm.
Pagination
The sheets were paginated "1)"–"29)" and "31)"–"54)" in the lower left margin in lead pencil, possibly by Joyce, and pp. [2]–[30] are also stamped "2"–"29", pp. [32]–[41] are stamped "31"–"41" and pp. [43]–[55] are stamped "42"–"54" in the upper right margin in black ink; p. [42] is also paginated " 41 " in the upper right corner in lead pencil in another hand and " 41bis " in blue crayon in the upper left corner.
Contents
The manuscript is the printers’ copy of the typescript of the "Circe" episode, comprised of mixed top and bottom copies of what were at least 4 complete typescripts (a top copy and 3 bottom copies), of which 3 partial, other copies survive (Buffalo MSS V.B.13.e, 13.f and 13.g). This part of the typescript was prepared directly from the Rosenbach manuscript (faircopy) version of the episode (see CSE 1884–1885). The typescript was revised by Joyce, who also made most of these same emendations on the corresponding pages of the other copies of the typescript and then he further revised only this copy. This copy of the typescript is continued on MS V.B.13.h.2. The text on the pages is as follows:

Other Markings
The instructions "début d’une partie" were written in the upper margin on p. [2], possibly by the printer. There are printers’ signatures on pp. [2], [8], [14], [19], [25], [26], [36], [42], [46], [50] and [53] and printers’ markings on all of the pages in lead pencil, except on pp. [15], [18], [20], [22], [23], [24], [32], [33], [35], [37]–[41], [43], [44] and [54]. Joyce drew a horizontal line across p. [55] in red crayon to indicate where an insert (Buffalo MS V.B.13.h.2) should be placed. There are stray blue crayon marks on pp. [33], [41] and [52], a stray red crayon mark on p. [32] and black ink smudges on pp. [5], [8], [9], [11], [12], [14], [15], [16] [21]–[24], [35] and [42]–[50].

Notes
All of the pages are lightly stained with black ink. There are 2 perforations in the left margin of each sheet, where the sheets were once fastened together. There is also blue ribbon ink on p. [18] and the sheets were folded in the center horizontally.
