VI.I.1.

*VI.I.1: "Work in Progress"/Finnegans Wake Emendations And Errata: Emendations for the Faircopy Draft of Finnegans Wake I.1 (1926):

Material Description, Collation

The manuscript is a loose sheet of rolled paper, with a watermark of an image of a mailed arm & battle-axe and below it: "FABRIQUÉ EN ÉCOSSE". Joyce used the sheet horizontally, with the perforated edge on the left hand side; the emendation is on the recto in Joyce’s hand in black ink. This manuscript is the same kind of paper as MSS VI.I.2, I.31, I.43, and VI.J.4; all were probably torn from the same or similar tablets or blocks of sheets.

Measurements

The manuscript measures 13.0 x 19.0 cm.

Contents

The manuscript is an extradraft sheet with instructions to further emend the twice-redrafted ink fair copy. See FW 029.02–04

JJA Draft Code

I.1§2.*2+.

Dating

The manuscript was probably written around 16 December 1926 (see JJA 44.141).

Other Markings

Joyce wrote "MS | page 26" in black ink in the upper margin of the recto: it refers to BL 47472, f. 30r (see JJA 44.140), where the emendation was added on the faircopy sheet by an amanuensis.

Notes

The emendation was transcribed by an amanuensis (probably not Beach, Maria Jolas, or Weaver) on the redrafted faircopy sheet (BL 47472, f. 30r; JJA 44.140) and was incorporated on the typescript (Private Collection; JJA 44.171).
