VI.I.14.

*VI.I.14: “Work in Progress”/Finnegans Wake Emendations and Errata: Scribal Copy of an Emendation for the Duplicate (Missing) Copy of the Typescript for This Quarter I.1/Finnegans Wake I.7 (1925):

Material Description and Collation

The manuscript is a loose sheet of blue stationery, watermarked with an image of a coat of arMS composed of a crown and two lions; it is torn along what is now its top edge. The manuscript is all in Beach’s hand in black ink and lead pencil. The manuscript is the same kind of paper as MSS VI.I.15 and I.22, but the torn edges do not appear to coincide, suggesting that they come from different sheets of similar paper.

Measurements

The manuscript measures 18.4 x 21.1 cm.

 Contents

The manuscript is an extradraft sheet that probably contains Beach’s note in lead pencil of Joyce’s instructions to make a corresponding emendation on her copy of the typescript for the printer of This Quarter. See This Quarter 114.19–20–05 as well as FW 179.27. There is also a list in black ink of page and line numbers, which does not appear to correlate to the typescript of I.7.

JJA Draft Code

JJA I.7§1.5’+.

Dating

Beach probably wrote on this sheet in July 1925.

Notes

Joyce also made the emendation on the extant typescript (BL 47474, f. 46; JJA 47.458) and it was incorporated in the published text of This Quarter (the proofs of which are missing).
Beach also made the following notation: “carbon pencil (glass finish) Am. Pencil Co. N.Y. | 113.”
