VI.I.16.

*VI.I.16 [Also see VI.B.9]: "Work in Progress"/Finnegans Wake Emendations and Errata: Emendation for the Duplicate (Missing) Copy of the Typescript for This Quarter I.1/Finnegans Wake I.7 (1925):

Material Description and Collation

The manuscript is a loose sheet of black-lined graph notepaper. Joyce used the sheet upside down from the perforation; the emendation is in Joyce’s hand in black ink. The manuscript was torn from the notebook now catalogued as Finnegans Wake notebook MS VI.B.9 and is the kind type of paper as MSS VI.I.13, VI.J.1 and J.8.

Measurements

The manuscript measures 10.4 x 16.6 cm., though there is 1.5 x 5.8 cm. portion missing from the top perforated edge.

 Contents

The manuscript is an extradraft sheet that contains instructions (presumably to Beach) to make a corresponding emendation on her copy of the typescript for the printer of This Quarter. See This Quarter 114.34 as well as FW 180.09.

JJA Draft Code

JJA I.7§1.5’+.

Dating

Joyce probably made this emendation in July 1925.

Notes

The emendation was also made on the extant typescript (BL 47474, f. 46; JJA 47.458) in Joyce’s hand but was not incorporated in the published text of This Quarter (the proofs of which are missing); the revision as directed on this manuscript does not appear on any subsequent draft or printing of the text.
