*VI.I.3.a: "Work in Progress"/Finnegans Wake Emendations and Errata: Emendations for the Later Galley Proofs of transition 2/Finnegans Wake I.2 (1927):

Material Description, Collation

The manuscript is a loose sheet of black lined graph paper, possibly cut from a larger sheet or torn from a tablet. The emendation is on the recto in Joyce’s hand in black ink and lead pencil.

Measurements

The manuscript measures 13.2 x 21.2 cm.

Contents

The manuscript is an extradraft sheet with instructions to Beach to have the printers further emend the proofs of transition 2 (May 1927), only one earlier copy of which is know to be extant on which only printers’ errors were corrected. See transition 2 102.19 and 103.37 as well as FW 044.04–05 and 041.36.

JJA Draft Code

JJA I.2§2.7+.

Dating

Joyce made these emendations in early April 1927.

Notes

Joyce had already made these additions on the typescript prepared for the printers of transition 2 (BL 47472, fs. 219r and 221r, see JJA 45.78 and 80), but they were not incorporated in the printed text. Joyce may have noticed that they were absent and sent these emendations to Beach. They presumably arrived too late to be incorporated on the proofs and were not printed in the text of transition 2 (also see MS VI.I.4). They were also among the additions and revisions Joyce also made to the revised pages of transition 2 in the mid 1930s (BL 47475, fs. 18v and 19r; JJA 45.109) that were submitted to the printers of Finnegans Wake: these revisions were set as directed on those proofs.

The manuscript was folded horizontally and vertically.
