Material Description and Collation
The manuscript is a loose sheet of heavy, plain-white paper, a single-spaced, top (original) black ribbon copy; the verso is blank.
Measurements
The sheet measures 21.0 x 31.0 cm.
Contents
The manuscript is a typescript copy of Joyce’s instructions to Beach for emendations to a missing copy of the second typescript of Book III. See FW 414.07, 443.04, 452.01–02, 452.04, 478.18, 478.19–20, 479.09, 481.08, 482.09, 490.08, 497.04, 497.30, 504.02, 520.03, 522.07, 524.27, 526.28, 527.35, 527.35, 529.19, 532.02, 557.07, 557.17, 558.20, 561.09, 565.36, 567.01, 570.33, 576.04, 576.16, 576.22, 579.18, 580.27, 584.24, 586.15, and 587.15.

Dating
The manuscript was probably typed in August 1926 at Joyce’s instruction while he was on holiday in Belgium. It may be the manuscript referred to in Joyce’s 2 September 1926 letter to Beach (MS X.C.106; JJSB 69–70 [#83]).
Other Markings
"ERRATA." was typed in the upper margin of the recto and "I" was written in lead pencil probably in Beach’s hand, probably after she prepared MS VI.I.40.b. Presumably Beach wrote the check marks in lead pencil and black ink and dashes in black ink here as she made these emendations to her copy of the typescript. Beach began to write "p 69 l" in black ink and then crossed it through in black ink.
Publication
The manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 57.284, 58.273, and 60.298.
Notes
Sylvia Beach probably did not prepare this typescript. Joyce also made these emendations on the extant pages of a copy of the typescript (BL MSS 47483, fs. 58, 170, 174 and 47484a, fs. 124–27, 131, 133, 134, 136, 144 and 146; JJA 57.256, 270, 274 and 58.246–249, 253, 255, 256, 258, 265, and 267); no copy of the second typescript of III.4 is known to be extant. Joyce made a list of the typescript pages that are referred to here on Buffalo Finnegans Wake notebook MS VI.B.12.128, 145, and 148, probably in July 1926. Several emendations on this manuscript are also listed on MSS VI.I.40.a and 40.b.
