VI.I.42.a.

*VI.I.42.a [See X.C.107 (X.C.101)]: "Work in Progress"/Finnegans Wake Emendations and Errata: Emendations for a (Missing) Duplicate Copy of the Second Typescript of Book III/Finnegans Wake III.1–4 (1926):

Material Description and Collation

The manuscript consists of 2 loose sheets of Hotel de l’Ocean, Ostende, Belgium, stationery; the emendations are in Joyce’s hand in black ink and lead pencil and in Beach’s hand in black ink. It was enclosed with Joyce’s letter to Beach dated 2 September 1926 but was only catalogued after the publication of JJSB.

Measurements

The sheets measure 21.3 x 27.5 cm.

Contents

The manuscript is an extradraft sheet that contains instructions to Beach to emend a missing copy of the second typescript of Book III. Joyce asked Beach to prepare a copy of these instructions and send them to The Dial (see MS VI.I.40.b for a copy of one of three of the errata sheets that were sent to the printer; Beach to Marriane Moore, 16 September 1926, in Keri Walsh’s The Letters of Sylvia Beach [New York: Columbia University Press], p. 112). Dating

The manuscript was probably written on 11 September 1926.

Publication

This manuscript is unpublished but Joyce’s letter in which this manuscript was enclosed was published in JJSB70–71(#84).

Other Markings

Joyce headed the recto of the first sheet "abcd" in the upper left corner in black ink. Joyce presumably added the emendation in lead pencil in the lower margin on the first sheet after he written the others. After this, Beach added yet another emendation in black ink, based on the instructions from Joyce in MS X.C.106 (X.C.100). It was probably Beach who wrote the question mark beside an emendation on the first sheet in black ink.
