VI.I.42.b.

*VI.I.42.b: "Work in Progress"/Finnegans Wake Emendations and Errata: Typescript Copy of Emendations for a (Missing) Duplicate Copy of the Second Typescript of Book III/Finnegans Wake III.1–4 (1926):

Material Description and Collation

The manuscript consists of 2 sheets of unlined paper, a double-spaced top (original) blue ribbon copy; the first sheet is typed on the recto and verso and the second sheet only on the recto.

Measurements

The sheets measure 21.0 x 26.8 cm.

Contents

The manuscript is a typescript copy of Joyce’s instructions for emendations to be made by the printers to a missing copy of the second typescript of Book III. See MS VI.I.34.a, for further details. Another copy of this was probably mailed to The Dial by 16 September 1926 (see Beach to Marriane Moore, 21 July and 16 September 1926, in Keri Walsh’s The Letters of Sylvia Beach [New York: Columbia University Press], p. 112).

Dating

The manuscript was probably typed between 12 and 15 September 1926.

Other Markings

"CORRECTIONS TO BE MADE IN THE Typescript OF MR James Joyce:" was typed in the upper margin of the recto of the first sheet and "Corrections for MS . of Mr James Joyce." was typed in the top margin of the recto of the second sheet. The emendations were also headed by the typist "page:" and "line:" in black ink on the recto of the first sheet and typed on the recto of the second sheet (the two emendations on the verso of the first sheet are not headed). Subsequently, the recto of the first sheet was also headed "Errata II" at the top of the page in lead pencil (probably in Beach’s hand) and the recto of the second sheet was also headed "Errata III" also in lead pencil (also probably in Beach’s hand); this later heading was presumably made when copies of these sheet were sent to the printer along with MS VI.I.38 [VI.H.1], which was headed "Errata. ^I^". Beach presumably also annotated the typescript in black ink and marked the emendations with crosses, dashes, and questions marks in the left margin of both sheets, after she had made or tried to make the emendations on a copy of the typescript.

Notes

Joyce also made these emendations on the extant pages of a copy of the typescript (BL MSS 47483, fs. 54, 56, 57, 59–62, 163, 174, 176, 179, and 47484a, fs. 124, 128, 129, 133, and 145; JJA 57.252, 254, 255, 257–260, 263, 274, 276, 279 and 58.246, 250, 251, 255, and 266); no copy of the second typescript of III.4 is known to be extant.
