Material Description and Collation

The manuscript is a sheet of unlined paper, with writing on only one side of the sheet in Joyce’s hand in black ink; the verso is blank.


Measurements

The manuscript measures approximately 20.6 x 26.8 cm.


Contents

The manuscript is an extradraft sheet headed by Joyce’s note to a typist or printer and contains 5 emendations that are keyed to a post-transition 12 document. These additions all appear on the first set of galleys for Finnegans Wake III.1 (see BL MSS 47487, fs. 13 and 14; JJA 62.023–025; also see FW 420.20, 420.27, 420.32, and 420.36–421.10).

Dating

Joyce probably wrote this manuscript sometime in 1936–1937.


Publication

The manuscript has been reproduced in black and white photo-facsimile on JJA 40.348–349.


Other Markings

Joyce tagged the manuscript at the top of the recto with a "D" in blue crayon, which presumably corresponds with the same tag on the addition on the missing manuscript, and an "X" in red crayon.
